We have a long term contract opening in Troy Michigan for a Metallography Lab Technician. This position is approved for 1 year and could be extended.

Pay Rate: $24.03 - $28.85/Hr. (depending on experience)

Metallography lab technicians conduct physical testing to root cause an issue or to generate

data for customers. They are experienced in steel making, lab procedures, testing methods, and equipment related to metallography. A qualified candidate will be:

Experienced and knowledgeable in the preparation of metallurgical samples

Understanding of steel theory & processes

Able to perform analysis on materials components and sheet steel

Prepare samples for analysis using polishing, macro etch and micro etch techniques

Experienced in operating an optical microscope

Demonstrated ability to operate scanning electron microscope

Create metallurgical reports

Provide technical support to engineers

Comfortable working with hand tools and power tools

Maintain effective communication with managers, supervisors, engineers and employees

Min of 2 years’ experience in metallography lab testing

Associates Degree (material, science) or equivalent work experience.

Working in a team environment

Proficient in writing technical reports.

Sample sectioning of submitted flat or formed parts.

Microhardness Testing, weld HAZ profile.

Chemical removal of coatings and paint.

Coating Weight Determination, Weigh-Strip-Weigh or X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF).

%Fe in coating determination (wet chem.)

Metallographic sample mounting, polishing.

Grain Size Determination.

Etching to characterize micro structure and imperfections.

Optical Metallograph's for examination and imaging.

Digital Optical Microscope/High resolution for plane & 3D measurements.

Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Imaging, Measuring, Fracture Analysis.  When employing Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) System, identify particular elements and their relative proportions in inclusions, artifacts, particles associated with Steelmaking, and subsequent processing steps.

Equipment with Analytical Techniques help in problem solving resolve for Customer and Mill imperfections.
