Johnson Service Group is currently seeking a Sr. Composite Deign Engineer for a permanent opportunity in Simi Valley, CA. 

Position Summary:

Our Client is seeking a hands-on and experienced composite materials design engineer to join our team developing next-generation unmanned air-vehicles. You will support various company projects and programs across the entire life cycle of product development of unmanned air-vehicles and/or subsystems. This position will be an integral part of the Aero-Mechanical Team working on composite air-vehicles including the design, analysis, and testing of airframe structure, material selection, interfacing those structures with various air-vehicle subsystems, prototype fabrication, and assist in the eventual transfer of design to product suppliers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Produce airframe structural configuration layouts and detail designs and analyses including preliminary sizing, performance estimates, materials selection, interface definition for parts and assemblies employing both metallic and composite materials.
  • Create and update 3D CAD models and 2D CAD drawings of designs.
  • Design analysis with specialized computer tools.
  • Take an active role coordinating with members of other engineering groups (power, propulsion, avionics, manufacturing, procurement) to mature the design from conception to manufacturing.
  • Interface with suppliers to define work, RFP / RFQ packages and evaluate responses.
  • Prepare detail design packages for review and release to support FAA certification.
  • Assistance in design for manufacturing processes for improved quality and lowered costs.
  • Evaluate static, dynamic, fatigue, vibration, ground and flight-testing activities.
  • Prepare detailed structural & materials test requirements including test plans and results reports.
  • Create reports and contribute to periodic design reviews to ensure designs meet company requirements.
  • Prepare and support program reviews. Contribute to proposals, reports, and presentations where structural engineering is relevant.
  • Maintain objectivity and composure under pressure.
  • Be agile and open to deal with shifting priorities, demands, and timelines.

Required Qualifications & Background

  • US Citizenship or Permanent Resident (Green Card) required due to ITAR
  • BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering.
  • 9+ plus years of demonstrated experience in aerospace structural composite engineering.
  • Strong technical background in fiberglass and carbon composites design, including composites stacking sequence, lamination theory, honeycomb core, bonded assemblies, manufacturing, fabrication processes, and machining operations.
  • Significant understanding of aircraft composite materials.
  • Significant experience with 3D CAD software and composite ply definition.
  • Hands-on experience with the composite part manufacturing and assembly a must.
  • Some travel required.
  • MS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering is a plus.
  • Relevant hands-on/manufacturing experience with composite materials a plus.
  • LSA or FAR 23 certification experience a plus.
  • Experience with FAA or EASA Certification requirements, testing and report writing a plus.
  • Design experience with primary and secondary aircraft composite structures a plus.
  • Education / experience or aircraft subsystems in R&D environment a plus.
