We have an immediate need for a Sr. Piping Designer in Canonsburg, PA. which is about 20 miles southwest of Pittsburgh and just north of Washington, PA. This is a long term 1 to 2 years contract position.

This position covers the responsibilities at the senior specialist of the designers function. Incumbents are generally assigned to a major project with design supervisor assistance, or an entire medium sized project with complex responsibilities. On major projects the responsibilities include workshare management between multiple offices. This person must be able to exercise independent judgment in planning, scheduling, organizing, controlling scope and budget, and resolve design solutions between all project disciplines including PM or PE. The responsibilities also include exercising initiative in adapting and applying procedures to address unusual problem situations and resolving most conflicts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ability to produce all design drawings and 3-D models from reference information including rough sketches, notes, vendor drawings, or general direction from others.
  • Create field sketches with critical dimensions to aid in equipment layout and routing of piping systems.
  • Create piping isometric and orthographic drawings as well as 3-D perspective drawings to support the various phases of engineering design.
  • Complete piping design following client and company standards as well as applicable codes, including pipe supports, pipe stress, etc.
  • Ability to complete total project design through personal work or in collaboration with other personnel.
  • Ability to schedule the work to complete design documents that both satisfy project scope and project schedule.
  • Prepare material take-offs including pipe, fittings, valves, etc. to support various cost estimates as required by the project.
  • Collaborate with other members of the project team to ensure all project requirements are met.
  • Estimating time required to complete specific scopes of work to support the proposal process.
  • Keeping up to date on new design processes, modeling, drafting techniques / procedures, and IMS and standards.
  • Developing and recommending improvements in design standards to lower cost improve work quality and facilitate maintenance.
  • Investigating, advising and resolving unusual design and field engineering problems by devising new approaches or applying existing criteria in novel ways.
  • Communicate with other departments to ensure that the piping design reflects the current information from all departments and that all departments have the latest piping design information.
  • Making recommendations to improve unit efficiency in construction, operations and maintenance.
  • Incorporating safety in design considering construction, operations and maintenance.
  • Ensuring that effective methods and design techniques are used.
  • Resolving project issues and problems while considering all disciplines.
  • Host a 3D model review for all disciplines while keeping the review on schedule. Have the ability to drive the review model, sell the layout and design, scribe the model review comments, and make model shots of comments.
  • Foster a spirit of enthusiasm, client focus, team building, and continuous improvement with the group.  Operates with a sense of urgency in completing assigned tasks.
  • Ensuring alignment between all disciplines that are involved with 3D CAD to prepare for model reviews and issue of project deliverables.
  • Works autonomously with minimal or no direct supervision.
  • Keep department manager informed of project status and challenges.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Preferred Education and Relevant Experience/Training:

  • Technical college graduation with 10 years plus of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Solid understanding of 2D and 3D computer applications for engineering design.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changes in technology.
  • Ability to integrate new technologies into daily work processes.
  • In depth knowledge of piping design standards, methods and practices.
  • Significant knowledge of manufacturing, process, maintenance and construction methods.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication skills required.
  • Organizational skills required.
  • Experience working with other disciplines understanding their interface requirements.

Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent knowledge of piping and equipment layout complying with industry standards.
  • Knowledge of 3D CAD software capabilities and limitations.
  • Experienced in developing logical sequencing of work.

Computer Skills:

  • MS Office (Excel and Word) proficiency required.
  • Strong knowledge of the following software:  AutoCAD, 3D CAD (Cadworx, Plant 3D)
